Biblical Guidance on Proposal 3

On November 8th, Michigan voters will decide upon Proposal 22-3, otherwise known as Proposal 3 or the “Right to Reproductive Freedom Initiative,” which seeks to make abortion a constitutional right without restriction.  It also seriously limits the state legislature from passing future laws that would seek to regulate abortion in any way.  Furthermore, the terms of the proposal could deceptively undermine the rights of parents to be informed and make decisions on behalf of their children as it relates to prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, contraception, sterilization, abortion care, miscarriage management, and infertility care.  Click here to view the full text of Proposal 22-3.  (Note: At the end of the Proposal is an actual example of the Official Ballot wording.)

Proposal 3 is immoral and stands in direct opposition to the Word of God.  If passed it would undermine families, parent-child relationships, personal lives, and cause serious harm to the most innocent and vulnerable among us: our children.

Before going any further, we acknowledge that these issues are not merely theoretical, but deeply affect many individuals in a very personal way.  We welcome all who are hurting and broken to seek the redemption, restoration, and healing that only the love of God can bring.

To anyone dealing with an unplanned pregnancy: we acknowledge that you may be fraught with desperation, hopelessness, and fear.  Know that Jesus Christ is our Living Hope, and nothing is impossible with God.  We encourage you to place your whole trust in Him and seek support from within the church.  You and your baby are loved.  We are here for you [Isaiah 41:10; Jeremiah 29:11; 2 Timothy 1:7; Joshua 1:9; Matthew 17:20; 1 Peter 1:3; Romans 8:28].

To anyone who experienced an abortion: know that no sin is too great for the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus.  God loves you deeply and His grace is sufficient for you.  Restoration is available for all who come to Him in humility, faith, and repentance.  There is no condemnation for those in Christ [John 3:16; Romans 3:23-24; Romans 6:12-14; Romans 8:1; 2 Corinthians 12:9; Psalm 103:12; 1 John 1:9].

Let us be clear, this is not a political issue but a moral and spiritual issue that has been greatly politicized.  We do not endorse political figures or parties, nor do we place our hope in the rule of man.  Our hope lies in the unchanging Word of God, which will far outlast any earthly kingdom and endure the test of time.  God is sovereign above all, and we are commanded to honor and submit to the authorities He has placed over us while trusting in His righteous judgement.  As a Christian and American, we have a unique opportunity to participate in the democratic process while seeking first to preserve the integrity of the Gospel by exhibiting the grace, love, and mercy of our Lord and Savior [Romans 13:1-7; Hebrews 13:17; 1 Peter 2:13-17].

As Christians, we are to seek unity within the body of Christ by surrendering our will and conforming to the will of God.  Romans 12:2 (ESV) states, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”  As Elders of Solid Rock Bible Church, we desire to lead you in the truth of Scripture so that you may stand firm, discern His perfect will, and confidently walk in obedience [Ephesians 5:15-17].

Life is sacred.  All human beings are created in the image and likeness of God and are endowed with intrinsic value by virtue of His divine nature [Genesis 1:26-27].  To treat a fetus as a “clump of cells” is to deny the sanctity of life that God has bestowed upon every human being.  Yet, the cruel denial of that personhood is often provided as justification for abortion.

Life begins at conception.  God is sovereignly at work in the creation and formation of each human life in the womb [Isaiah 44:24; Job 31:15].  From the moment of conception, an individual comes into being having his or her own unique set of DNA and genetic code that differentiates that life from the mother.  Far from a “clump of cells,” these intricate systems bear the handiwork of a divine Creator and immediately go to work multiplying, growing, moving, and feeling.  They develop into hands, feet, a brain, and a beating heart.  The Psalmist expresses the wonder of God at work from the moment of conception in this way:

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.  Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.  My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.  Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” [Psalm 139:13-16 ESV]

All life belongs to God.  He is the giver of life, and He alone has the power to take it, or grant the permission to take it.  In Exodus 20:13, God established the sixth commandment, “You shall not kill.”  This word refers to pre-meditated or unjustified violence with the intent to kill.  Abortion is a planned procedure to end the life of an innocent and defenseless person.  The Lord hates the shedding of innocent blood [Proverbs 6:16-17; Exodus 23:7; Ezekiel 16:20-21].

Although our children ultimately belong to God, He has entrusted parents to raise them in the instruction of the Lord and to guide their hearts in truth [Ephesians 6:4; Proverbs 22:6; Deuteronomy 6:6-7; Psalm 127 3:5; Matthew 19:4; Matthew 18:10; John 16:21].  Proposal 3 takes away parental authority and entrusts it to government and health professionals.  By broadly defining the term “reproductive freedom,” and excluding exceptions based on the age of a minor, this proposal could effectively circumvent all parental rights on behalf of their child’s pregnancy, sexuality, sexual identity, gender identity, and sterilization.  This potentially includes chemical castration by administration of puberty blockers and body mutilating gender transition surgery without parental knowledge, consent, or recourse [Genesis 1:27; Genesis 2:24; Genesis 5:2; Leviticus 18:1-30; Leviticus 20:13; Romans 1:24-32; Galatians 5:16-26; 1 Corinthians 5:1-2, 6:9-20; Colossians 3:5; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; 1 Timothy 1:9-10].

All people are broken by sin, and everyone struggles with its impact on their lives and relationships.  Restoration to a right relationship with God is readily available to all who come to Him in humility and repentance.  Solid Rock Bible Church is filled with broken people that God has restored and uses mightily.  No sin, not even abortion, is so deep that the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus cannot reach it.  Because of His work on the cross we who have put our faith in Jesus Christ have complete forgiveness, acceptance, hope, and a clear conscience.  If you have not already done so we urge you come to Him now.  To receive God’s forgiveness and walk in newness of life simply believe in Him and ask Him to forgive you for your sins [John 3:16; Romans 10:10; 2 Corinthians 6:2].

Please prayerfully seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance as you evaluate these issues and press into the Living Word of God.

“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse.  Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days…” [Deuteronomy 30:19-20a ESV]

May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.  To Him we give all the glory. Amen.
